When to Apply to College or Grad School

Times have changed many things since the turn of the millennium, and college enrollment timelines are certainly no exception. No longer are students required to apply to college only in the spring months just so they can start taking college classes in the traditional "back to school" fall semesters or quarters. Now, in the world of online classes and even at some brick and mortar campuses, students have the convenience of enrolling and taking classes throughout the calendar year. This is great for students who are eager to begin their college classes right away, but it may cause some confusion as to just when students should apply to college and grad school.

Though application deadlines vary from school to school, and information about deadline dates is generally posted on college and grad school websites, a good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that you will need to apply at least four to seven months prior to the time that you plan to actually take classes.  Remember, the application process often requires some work on your end, as you will often have to submit the application form, an application fee, transcripts, letters of recommendation, a personal statement or essays, and proof of residency in some cases.  Therefore, leave yourself adequate time to go through the application steps so that you don't miss posted deadline dates.

There are also some special application dates to take into consideration in some cases:

  • Early Decision: Some students who are very sure of the school they want to get into may want to apply as "early decision" candidates; check with the admissions office for early decision guidelines
  • Late Applications: Students may have extenuating circumstances that prevented them from applying on time; some admissions committees will consider late applicants under certain conditions, so be sure to check with your school's admissions office if you would like special consideration
  • Restricted Enrollment Programs: If you are trying to get into a highly competitive or otherwise restricted college or program, you may have to apply well in advance of the actual enrollment date; be sure to do your research with such programs to make sure you do not miss important application steps and timelines

Again, if you take some time to research your college application options by contacting the admissions office or searching the college website, you should be well-prepared to submit timely information that works best with your own personal college education timeline.  Stay focused on actually getting admitted to the college of your choice, and before you know it, you will be taking those college classes and living out your educational dreams.  Good Luck!
